Back in the medieval days, they relied on Asia and the Middle East for the knowledge to start rebuilding what they allowed to go completely to shit during the Roman empire. If it weren't for them, they would continue living in squalor with human shit in shallow canals running down the main streets of villages, and be uneducated and limited.
